Ilminster Town Council council tax precept goes up by 20 per cent

ILMINSTER Town Council last night agreed to put up its council tax precept by 20 per cent.

Councillors voted in favour of raising the precept from £205,873 in 2012-13 to £236,100 in 2013-14 at last night’s full council meeting.

The increase will see the portion of a Band D property taken by the town council top £100, rising by 31p a week to just over £110, up from £96.82 last year.

The increase is due to Central Government changes relating to council tax benefit which will have a direct impact on town and parish council precepts nationwide.

Members of the Ilminster council’s finance committee were last week told that unless they put up the budget the council would not have enough money to carry out the services it currently provides and so recommended the increase.

Chard Town Council last week put up its precept by 8p per average Band D household per week because of the changes in council tax benefit with a budget of £530,854 for 2013-14.

Finance committee chairman Cllr Martin Wale, who was unavailable for last week’s meeting, told the News: “I am disappointed that we have had to increase the precept in Chard, especially as we were going to recommend no increase this year, again.

“The decision to increase by 8p a week was brought about by changes in the|benefit system passed down from Government via South Somerset|District Council and we were left with a decision to cut services or increase the precept.”

If the recommendations went through as expected last night it would mean Ilminster Town Council’s budget would be £236,100 for 2013-14 – an increase of £87,990 in two years.

So, we're in for another increase in the Ilminster precept of the Council Tax. Question.- What happened to the £80K raised in last years precept rise to pay for the MUGA in the Rec and other services. Also these 'services' provided by Ilminster council, what are they?. Maybe some of the increase could be used to produce a factsheet laying out the Councils responsibilities to be delivered to the households in the area.

Come on ITC, surely it's time to tell Orchardman "you should stand for election if you don't like it... "

Just because you ask a question and have an opinion it dose not mean you want to be a councillor. I would also like to know what they have done with all the extra money they had last year. Maybe they could spend some of it sorting out the mess left by the fair last year on the rec and sorting out the drainage.

Wurzeld, that's pretty much my point. That whole "why don’t you stand for election"? nonsense just does not wash. It never has and it never will.

We cannot all be in employed public service, someone has to pay the bills.

Last year we donated a Mars Bar each week to the council to build a Skate Park and MUGA. Yet to see the MUGA so one assumes that money is still in the bank. This year they only want half a Mars Bar (or 3/5th to be exact, ignoring inflation). Is it not time the council got real and tightened its belts just as we all have to. If the council publishes its full accounts the public will then see where all the money is spent and possibly be more sympathetic to its cause.

May I join the previous four luminaries in asking "where has our money gone?" and "why won't you tell us where our money has gone?"
Our MUGA appears to have been replaced by a gang of muggers.

39% last year, 20% this year = a combined total of 66.8% in 2 years. For the same services. Are ITC on the same planet as the rest of us. Maybe they will give us a rebate from the money taken from us for the MUGA, think it works out to about 4 multi-packs of mars bars for everyone, as that seems to be the currency they like to deal in.

MUGA is the "street" term for Mugger. I didn’t think that the council would employ chav patois but there you have it. MUGAs in Ilminstah, eh blud.

The councillors were pretty vocal about last years increase, incensed even, they certainly seem a bit quiet this time around.

Personally, I'm a Snickers man. Marathon for preference.

Regarding the damage to the rec by the fair last year, maybe this year should a similar situation occur, which is quite likely bearing in mind groundwater levels which will take a long time to go down, the council member responsible will either cancel the early visit, or if it does go ahead and similar damage occur, have the guts to retain the deposit the fair supposedly puts up, rather than sympathise with them, as happened this year, and leave the cost of reinstatement to the ratepayers yet again.
