Pigeon netting under bridge collapses Pigeon netting under bridge collapses

THE pigeon netting under the rail bridge at Taunton Station has collapsed and is causing drivers to take evasive action.

Police are on the scene to ensure people's safety.

Network Rail has been informed.

The netting was put up as part of a scheme to deter pigeons from roosting under the bridge.

The project, along with painting and repairing the bridge, cost hundreds of thousands of pounds.

What a total waste of money. But fairly typical!!

This is a waste and insult to the public purse! How many of us commented in these columns how insufficient the replacement netting would be and that a light wire frame would have done the job properly for little extra cost. Considering one of the main original objectives to this investment was to end the damage and health risks caused by the pigeons I think it's failure should prompt an SG investigation to establish responsibility. It's in the context of the austerity cuts that such wasted expenditure highlights incompetence and a lack of listening to the predicted consequences. The pigeons got in even before the work was complete - that's when the need for improvements should have been identified and remedied.

OMG!

What a waste of time and money.

Maybe business's that were effected by the lengthy disruption to station road should be allowed some compensation for this fiasco.

Heads should roll for this.

How long until someone realises that either wire mesh is a solution to this problem or bird spikes as fitted to buildings all over the town, I have no confidence in the fools who commissioned the netting , I would not want the birds hurt but they need to be discouraged from certain places .

There will be a defects liability of 12 months for the contractor so no further spend should be needed.

Is that correct - all depends what was in the contract - you seem to forget - you get a cheap job - you get poor quality. You get what you pay for - just like the roads - they are all breaking up - cheap, cheap, cheap. Typical of this council
