Crowd attends Holocaust service

A CROWD gathered around Highbridge’s Frank Foley statue to mark World Holocaust Day.
Around 20 residents and councillors paid their respects to Holocaust victims on Sunday, January 27, by laying wreaths at the foot of the statue in Market Street.
Burnham and Highbridge Mayor Ken Smout and Chairman of Sedgemoor District Council Gill Slocombe contributed wreaths.
The ceremony was organised by the Highbridge War Memorial Trust and the service was conducted by Rev Sharon Crossman.
The statue commemorates Highbridge’s Major Frank Foley, who was an MI6 spy in Berlin during the 1930s.
As a passport control officer for the British embassy in Berlin, Foley helped thousands of Jewish families escape from Nazi Germany after Kristallnacht and before the outbreak of the Second World War.
