Children step back in time

CHILDREN at the village school in Merriott went back in time to the 1940s for their first topic of the spring term.
The week began with year 4 children performing a short play to introduce the Second World War topic.
A Wow Day of war-time themed lessons started with children attending the school’s Breakfast Club and enjoying|cereals popular in the 1940s.
Children and staff wore clothes of the period and lessons featured rationing, singing songs of the era, a ‘make do and mend’ session, and designing a propaganda poster.
At playtime children played old favourites such as Oranges and Lemons and Hopscotch.
And Aesops Touring Theatre Company performed a play based on a London family during the war.
The school is expecting several older visitors in coming weeks to talk about their wartime memories.
