A DETERMINED young girl will take on a three mile swimming challenge in memory of her grandfather.

Charlotte Gratrick, 11, will swim 200 lengths without stopping at Taunton pool on April 28 and has already raised more than £1,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Keen triathlete Charlotte, who attends Curry Mallet Primary School, followed in the footsteps of her grandfather Peter Macaulay who was also a keen swimmer.

But after the family lost Peter through cancer three years ago, Charlotte’s mum Anne Gratrick said her daughter has always wanted to take on a challenge in his name.

Speaking from their Isle Abbotts home, Anne said: “Charlotte was very close to her grandfather and he used to encourage her when she was getting her swimming badges and was always interested to hear how she was doing.

“She has wanted to raise money before but I thought she was too young. It is a big challenge but there is no way she will stop until she has done all 200 lengths.”
