Rowing on the River Parrett proposal backed by councillors
ROWING on the River Parrett could become a regular sight after councillors backed a proposal last week.
It is hoped to put two 40ft storage containers and steps down the riverbank near the town so rowers – beginners and experienced – can use the water.
Ian Payne, who is trying to promote rowing in Somerset, said he wants to bring the same success he has had on the River Tone in Taunton to Langport.
He said: “People have said it’s nice to see the water being used in Taunton, and the stretch of the Parrett at Langport is a good open bit of water I hope to be able to put to good use.
“We’ve identified the right place to do it, but hopefully with a bit of local knowledge we can work with the community to find out what’s going to be best for everyone.
“We’ve already had interest from Huish Episcopi Academy and youth clubs, so it would be great to keep promoting the sport in the community to get people rowing because it’s a good bit of river.”
Councillors gave a vote of confidence towards the project, which is awaiting final approval from the Environment Agency, and it is hoped rowers could be on the water later this year.
