TWO Quakers from Taunton have lobbied local MP Jeremy Browne to help bring an end to the Arms Trade in the UK.

Eleanor Tew and Fran Hicks met with Mr Browne last Friday to talk to him about the work of the Campaign against the Arms Trade (CAAT) who are calling for the closure of the Defence Export Services Organisation (DESO).

The campaign aims to highlight how the organisation promote arms exports across the world at a time when Parliament is considering introducing tougher arms export controls.

Mr Hicks said: "When we met Mr Browne we already knew he had signed the EDM 1798 calling for the closure of DESO: so knew he had some understanding of the issues and concern about its existence and practises.

"He has offered to write, on our behalf to Desmond Browne MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury."We are delighted with the support Mr Browne has given this issue and hope that, along with other constituents across the country who have been lobbyingtheir local MPs and raising awareness with the help CAAT, that there will be significant change in relation to the DESO."
