Carnival date change 'not set in stone'

“NOTHING is set in stone”, says Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Committee following a heated debate over its proposed date change.

Committee members met with representatives from Bridgwater clubs at Bar 27 last week to discuss plans for Burnham's procession to be held the night before Bridgwater's parade - making it first in the circuit.

The meeting saw a fresh round of threats from some Bridgwater clubs to boycott Burnham's parade this year if the date change goes ahead.

But Jan Paul, secretary of Highbridge and Burnham Carnival Committee, told the Mercury: “We've got permission for the date change, but nothing is set in stone.

“The only thing that was agreed was that we could have that date.”

A committee meeting will be held this week to discuss feedback from Bridgwater Clubs, and another meeting is planned for next week with other clubs in the circuit.

Jan added: “We need to decide on a date for definite, so we can meet with the emergency services and police and make sure it’s ok with them.

“We feel like we’ve been backed into a corner. The Monday is atrocious for us. If we keep it, we won’t be able to afford to keep carnival going - we’re losing money every year.”

Jan said another possible date discussed was Remembrance Sunday, but there was little support for that option.

Dave Stokes, publicity officer for Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival, told the Mercury: “It's up to Highbridge and Burnham carnival committee to do what they think is best for the future of their carnival.

“Our grand firework display always takes place the night before Bridgwater Carnival, and this will remain the case for 2013.”

The Burnham committee hopes to establish a solution by the end of this month.

Go on, change the date, why should Bridgwater change tradition and expect to get away with it.
Also why should Bridgwater brag that its the first when it isn't for most of the entries?

Agree let them change the date, But I will bet it will quickly change back again.
It is the people of Burnham and Highbridge who need to change, They must support the carnival both by helping the committee and providing Entries,
At the moment the carnival relies almost entirely on entries from other towns.
Come on Burnham Wake Up.

When they are eventually written in stone, please don't break them up and place them in the Ark of the Covenant.

I'd hate to get my face melted off like those Nazis did.

Rusty you are so far from the truth the largest entries both from Bridgwater and Glastonbury area start at the premiership carnival that is Bridgwater and this forms the start of the somerset county guy fawkes circuit which attracts entries from the earlier smaller circuits in the year e.g Taunton carnival (south somerset circuit). Get your facts right next time.

Very Funny but as well you know you can't wipe out over 400 years of history in a fly by night decision, Seriously though it doesn't matter if Bridgwater is first or last it will always be the heart of Carnival as we know it as it was the fine people of this town who started it and developed it in to the event we have today. Everything needs to move with the times or get stagnated it happens in sport and other entertainment events so why not Carnival Tradition is good yes and we should all remember our roots but times change what was good in the 70's may not be good now!! Love it or Hate it Carnival has been a major part of this town for hundreds of years and Hopefully be still here once Me and all you are long gone!! I love Bridgwater it has it's troubles but its where I was born and it is where I'm raising my Family. I've travelled alot in my time and I can asure you all there are a lot worse places to live so either embrace what this town has to offer and try to make it a better place or Move away to a location you may feel happier about.
