Driver bemoans Taunton RingGo parking system
7:40pm Tuesday 20th November 2012 in News By Andrew McGill
Rosie Roberts says she was given a parking ticket despite using the RingGo parking system.
A FRUSTRATED driver has hit out at a parking system in Taunton Deane which allows motorists to pay to park via their mobile phones.
Rosie Roberts, 20, of Creech St Michael, says she was landed with a fine after parking her Vauxhall Corsa at the Taunton multi-storey car park.
She says although she initially paid for a paper ticket, she decided to stay for longer and purchased additional time using the RingGo system.
Despite paying an additional £1.60, Rosie said she found a ticket when she returned to her car following her shopping trip last month.
She told the County Gazette: “It is a big hassle as I am having to appeal against the ticket and it is taking up a lot of my time.
“I am concerned that this could happen to other people so I want to warn people to be cautious when using the system.”
The RingGo system was introduced to allow shoppers to park their cars without worrying about carrying the correct change.
It is in force across 20 sites in Taunton and a further three in Wellington, including the Orchard Centre car park where Rosie received her fine.
A spokeswoman for Taunton Deane Council said: “In this case, we would encourage Ms Roberts to follow the appeal procedures on her fixed penalty notice.
“This can then be checked with the RingGo records and we can then take the appropriate action.”

Although I sympathise with the time it's taking to appeal etc, I'm wondering if the young lady had removed the original paper ticket. If there was no ticket in the car I presume the parking attendant would check Ringo records... but would not check if there was an expired ticket. I've used the Ringo service on numerous occasions and although I think the extra charge is a bit much, I have never had an issue.
I have also appealed tickets before and it's not a difficult process! You type your ticket number onto the online form and write the reason why you don't think you should have a tick and click send!

Whats new its happen to me the head of parking just overturned it. Happened alot when I was parking over near Bedford house.
The way they behave you would think they work for starling was running parking services there just such a nasty, spiteful bunch. They have a job to do and keep traffic moving by preventing illegal parking but it seems a numbers game with slap the fine without even checking. Other times you see people parked blocking the urban clear way and they are stood chatting and laughing without a care in the world. Why did they spend thousands changing their uniform from green to red? So much for cuts.
You also claim it's a numbers game - you're wrong . We get no incentive or bonus or any such reward from issuing tickets - to be honest we don't care if you get a penalty or not .
You're right about the urban clearway though - we do stand there when there are cars blocking the inside lane . If you look closely on the windscreen of the vehicle though you will see it has one of our penalty bags on . We don't have the power to move vehicles that are parked illegally hence the reason the vehicles sit there during clearway .
Nobody spent thousands changing the uniform . We were taken over by a company called NSL who's uniform is red - simple really .

I am sure the event in the story is a case of a ticket being issued based on the expired ticket without Ringo being checked. We are all human, mistakes happen, no one was harmed, the system hasn't failed, a young lady has been inconvienienced in a very very minor way, and I am sure thouse in charge will learn and develop systems to avoid this sort of error happening again with any regularity.
Shall we keep this in proportion? a one off or at least an infrequent event is barly newsworthy.
