OFFICIALS at Hinkley Point developer EDF Energy are celebrating a milestone after 1,000 Somerset companies signed up as potential contractors for their new nuclear power station.
Hinkley Point C, if granted permission to go ahead, will be the largest engineering project in Western Europe.
EDF Energy says it has already awarded contracts worth £25million to Somerset firms, with businesses in Bridgwater and Cannington among those selected.
Rupert Cox, chief executive of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, said: “It’s positive for us to work with EDF Energy to secure opportunities and benefits for local firms.
“The online registration process is straightforward and attracts a wide range of businesses who we can then communicate with.”
Chris Squires, from EDF, said: “This is a great milestone to have reached.
“I’d encourage other local companies to register their interest as there will be many millions of pounds worth of work on offer.”
