GREMLINS CC chairman, Andrew McLean, has described this year’s carnival as ‘a new era’ after the club’s Revolution entry scooped top spot.

He said the move to a Saturday attracted more crowds, adding: “It had a great atmosphere and I think it’s been extremely successful.”

The club decided to try something ‘a little different’ this year. Andrew explained: “We wanted to leave people with a feeling more than anything - a feeling to get up and join the revolution. I’m confident we achieved that.”

GREMLINS have been named the  best Local Feature Cart for the ninth year in a row. The club's spectacular Revolution entry beat Marketeers' Roller-Ghoster into second place, with Ramblers' Adventures of Ali Baba in third.

THOUSANDS of Carnival-goers are making their way home tonight after a successful 2012 Bridgwater Carnival.

Moved to a Saturday night for the first time, the event went off without serious problems and finished with the traditional squibbing display, which had to be cancelled in the wake of the M5 crash tragedy in 2011.

BANDS are playing, oversized balloons are waving in the crisp winter air and the smell of hotdogs is filling the streets of Bridgwater - must be carnival day.

The Mercury caught up with families to see how they are enjoying the line-up so far...

Caitlyn, 13, was relaxing with her family after performing for the crowds in her Majorettes group. She said: “It was really cold but we had a great reaction from the people watching. I’m glad people are enjoying the carnival build-up.”

George Rowell and Ali Noyes, from Wiltshire, brought five-year-old Scarlett Noyes for her first carnival. George said: “I’ve never been before and I didn’t expect there to be daytime entertainment too.

“It’s good because it gives people something to do to keep the kids entertained while they wait for the big event.”

Ali said: “I haven’t been for about 12 years but I thought it would be nice to show Scarlett the carnival.”

Charlie Cooper had the same idea for his daughter Lyra, five, and her friend Brandon Backway, ten.

He said: “We’re from Devon but Brandon has come all the way from France. This carnival is the biggest in the country and I think it’s brilliant.”

THE MERCURY has just heard from Roger Smith, manager of Angel Place shopping centre, that last year’s carnival saw 17,000 people pass through the centre on carnival day.

This year more than 10,000 have gone through in just one morning.

DON'T forget to chuck a couple of quid in the collection buckets tonight to help keep the Carnival thriving for years to come.

Collections for the free show have fallen for the last five years, so officials have asked for visitors to help reverse that trend tonight with your generosity.

TRAVEL ADVICE: If using the M5, you can exit at junctions 23 or 24 and follow signs for Bridgwater. Official car parks will be signposted. BUT...from 6pm traffic leaving at junction 24 will not be able to access the town, so use junction 23 or better still, arive early, there's lots to do in town before the parade begins!

DAWN has broken on Bridgwater Carnival Day 2012 - and the weather forecast is good!

Forecasters predict a mixture of sunshine and cloudy conditions throughout the day, with the possibility of a brief rain shower at about 3pm.

However, for the evening, no rain is forecast until 2am on Sunday, meaning the Carnival Clubs should enjoy good conditions for showing off their carts.

Temperatures will not climb above 5C this evening so everyone attending Carnival is advised to wrap up warm.

STAFF from the Bridgwater Mercury will be selling fantastic goodie bags on Carnival day tomorrow (Saturday 3).

The bags include a range of Lazy Town-themed fruit juice drinks (see picture) from Carnival sponsors Gerber - in lots of fantastic different flavours.

The Mercury stand will be right in the heart of the action in Bridgwater town centre, stationed outside Prezzo from 9am right through until well into the afternoon.

In 24 hours, a programme of day events for the first ever Saturday Bridgwater Carnival will begin.

The fun starts with a fireworks display on St Matthew's Field from 7.30pm, but there will also be family entertainment including fairground rides from 3pm.
