Walker says Castle Green's glass bridge is dangerous

A BRIDGE built as part of a £3m improvement scheme has been labelled dangerous by a woman who slipped on it.

Judy Howard said she managed to keep her footing, but is warning someone could be seriously injured on the glass-sided structure linking Castle Green to Goodland Gardens in Taunton.

“I was going over it at lunchtime when it was a bit wet and I slipped as I overtook two people,” said Mrs Howard.

“Luckily I caught my balance but it’s most unsafe and there are going to be lots of people injured and calling the council for compensation.”

She says the problem is that there is a strip of brickwork down the centre of the bridge with glass bands at the side.

“There were two people in the centre and I was rushing for a bus so overtook them on the side,” added Mrs Howard.

“I could have fallen on my face and lots of others have said it’s slippery. Someone less agile is going to break their neck.

“What really annoys me is they’ve spent so much time praising their own work yet it’s unsafe and I don’t think it looks that good anyway.”

The car park in Castle Green was ripped up and replaced with a grassed area, with a hard surface area in front of the Museum of Somerset so the area can be used as a public open space.

A Taunton Deane Council spokeswoman said: “The bridge has been carefully designed to incorporate specially formulated slip resistant material. It does not lose its slip resistant properties when wet, unlike other hard surfaces such as concrete or natural stone.

“The band of glass without anti-slip material measures just 32mm wide – smaller than two 5p coins laid side by side.

“We would advise people to take care in wet weather when walking on any hard surface – stone, Tarmac or concrete - particularly in autumn when wet leaves are on the ground.”

I went over this bridge on the first night it was lit and told friends and family that it was am accident waiting to happen. As stunning as it is the experts can say what they like, it IS dangerous. The fact that you can slip just a little because there are narrow non-slip bars does not take into account stumbling. It is the same as catching your toe on a kerb or raised pavement slab. The immediate reaction is to stumble forward and in some case fall over.
Check it out. It doesn't even have to be wet just dewey

It a free ice skating rink , that could have another one at the castle green too. really dangerous and stupid idea. how did did this bridge cost exactly!!!! i feel sorry for the person who slipped over, and glad she was ok, but it wont be the last time, watch out A and E when icy, mind you the bridge may be closed, like suspension bridge is when its windy

I've been over it quite a few times and not slipped yet - it certainly beats the original walled in path which seemed to be a magnet for drunks to loiter on.

Boliston, not suggesting you haven't, but have you walked over the side glass areas rather than the centre non-slip path. Take care in the wet

I walked over the glass out of curiosity (in the wet) and got surprisingly good purchase from my trainers. When it's wet or icy you take it easy when driving, so if the surface looks slippy then take it easy, there are hand rails either side to aide stability. Looks much better (the whole castle green area)

Useacarpark, good advice but even more care is needed here when it shouldn't be necessary.
In my business experience H & S would have a field day with a private company building it. I agree the bridge looks superb if out of context. Keep your fingers crossed
