Doesn't sound like such a good deal when you rephrase it as "£120 for a family of four"...

Folks need to know it will not be a steam train which the picture and caption at the head of this article might imply. Maybe the editor could change the picture? Try http://www.wsr.org.u

Considering that an average adult day return fare from Taunton to Bath is about £20, and the single bus fare Minehead to Taunton as about £9 (£18 return?), £35 from Minehead is not that bad. Travelling by normal public transport, changing at Taunton and for most trains at Bristol Temple Meads, the total fare would be about £38.
I accept there are cheaper advance purchase fares on the Trains but these are limited and at most reduce the rail fare by 50% to about £10.

Kevin,
A minor correction. The last time I used the bus from Taunton to Minehead I paid £6.15 but stiill it seems like a very good deal.
Paul.

I could only quote the fare as told to me as I have not use that route for some years. Even at £6.15 (£12.30 return) the overall total is £32.30 with the added inconvenience of changing at Taunton and Bristol.

That's fine Kevin, still a very good deal. The hassle of getting to Bristol/Bath from Minehead fills me with trepidation.

If they can run a train between Minehead and Bath then why not between Minehead and Taunton?

Single Bus fare of £9......absolute rubbish. The maximum price of a Day Ticket that can be used on all Bus services operated by First in the entire south west is only £ 7.00. The equivalent fare with Webberbus is even cheaper, and of course those with a Concessionary Pass pay nothing.
A far better alternative would be to use the Berrys Coaches shopper coach that runs every Saturday from Taunton and costs about £8.

Boliston, the Bristol train will be operated by First Great Western ie a mainline train operating company (TOC). The WSR's own trains cannot run on Network Rail as they do not have the necessary (and expensive) certification. Assuming WSR agree (as with the Bristol train), there is nothing in theory to stop a mainline TOC running a regular train between Minehead and Taunton. Just needs the will - and the certainty that ticket income will exceed expenses. Simple.

As I stated above, I quoted a bus fare as told to me by another local person. I have not used that route for some years and I am more than happy to accept that I may have not quoted the current fare.
However, considering that the through is what it says, all stations Minehead-Bishops Lydeard to Bristol and Bath without a change, it is a wonderful chance to visit either place without the hassle of a change.
And just to remind everyone that the train is operated by FGW. WSR rolling stock, as Steve Edge says, is not allowed on to Network Rail tracks. I therefore assume that the fare is set so that the operator (FGW) does not run the train at a loss.
