IF WE can't trust a doctor who can we trust?

That is the question asked in a fascinating performance coming up at The Castle Hotel in Taunton.

Dial Medicine for Murder is the story and juxtaposition of the two most notorious British physicians of the 20th century, Dr Harold Shipman and Dr John Bodkin Adams.

The production will compare and contrast the background, arrest, trial, legacy and psychopathology of both individuals interspersed with film footage and contemporaneous news items.

Dial Medicine for Murder will be presented as a consultation with Dr Harry Brunjes and Dr Andrew Johns, who first met as medical students at Guys Hospital, followed by careers in general medicine and forensic psychiatry respectively.

Dr Harry Brunjes and Dr Andrew Johns present an intelligent and intimately performed hour, discussing the intricacies of two of our country's most infamous serial killers.

As experts in the case of Dr John Bodkin Adams and Dr Harold Frederick Shipman, Brunjes and Johns examine the victims' stories, the odd circumstances of multiple deaths and ask the big question: why was one convicted and the other wasn't? By recalling the trials they discuss what went wrong for Adams and how Shipman averted custody for so long.

It's a haunting prospect for us all to think that it might happen again, but Brunjes and Johns assure the audience that measures have since been taken to regulate the amount of morphine one person can access.
