THERE are Christmas puddings in August and a cheese so big it takes four men to carry it.

The East Brent Harvest Home luncheon is not only the oldest of its kind in Somerset, it’s also regarded by many as the best.

Started in 1857, the luncheon attracts over 450 people and tickets for this year’s event are now on sale.

From the pudding parade to top entertainment, there are traditions old and new alongside a first class menu.

Colin Loader, chair of the East Brent Harvest Home committee said: “The luncheon is steeped in Somerset history.

“It was founded by the local vicar, Archdeacon George Denison who was rather concerned at the revelry shown by local farmers at harvest events. In other words, there was a lot of drinking."

People start to arrive just before noon and at 12.45pm, a religious service takes place, followed by the luncheon until around 3.30pm. There is a bar and a variety of entertainment until 9pm.

This year’s event is on Friday, August 28. Tickets, costing £17, are on sale at The Brent Knoll Inn or from 12 Manor Close, East Brent (Tel 01278 760754 for more details). Entry is free after 3.30pm.
