THE long-running and highly popular Highbridge Arts Festival this week returns for its 68th year.

The event, which is being held at The Princess Theatre in Burnham until Tuesday (March 10), will see hundreds of colours and creative entries from all over the South-West come to compete in the arts of music, dance, speech and drama.

The festival was first held in 1948 at Highbridge Town Hall, and has grown from an afternoon of performances to a large event held over nine days at the Princess Theatre.

In 2012 there were over 1,750 performances during the festival.

The festival welcomes dancers over four days, speech and drama students and performers for two days, vocalists and musicians for over four days.

All the classes are adjudicated by professional adjudicators who are recognised by the federation.

Marks are awarded using a national scale so performers can compare themselves with festivals nationwide and internationally.
