BRIDGWATER music fans are in for a treat as Danny & The Champions of the World, above, come to town this October as part of their ever-popular UK tour.

It has been a busy couple of months for the group after releasing their new album Stay True in September and, with a bunch of gigs coming up over the winter months, it’s clear to see they will still be busy rocking away come the New Year.

Danny & The Champions of the World has always been a pretty loose collection of great musicians, songwriters, stowaways and adventurers.

The current line up is the steadiest so far – it’s not a collective of folks now, it’s a band, and a great band at that, consisting of Danny George Wilson (acoustic guitar, lead vocals), Chris Clarke (bass, vocals), Paul Lush (guitar, vocals), Steve Brookes (drums, vocals) and Geoff Widdowson (saxophone, organ, vocals).

Danny (George Wilson) has been touring the world and making critically acclaimed records for nearly 20 years and recorded the latest album over five days at North London’s Reservoir Studios with Champs bass player Chris Clarke (ex- Rockingbirds)

He described the scene and feel of the mood during their recordings.

Danny said: “Catching sleep on the control room sofa, recording deep into the night, friends and musicians dropping by and being inspired by the great soul, country and rock n’ roll of Stax, Muscle Shoals, The Band, Dan Penn & Spooner Oldham, Dion DiMucci, Van Morrison.

“It’s Ronnie Lane meets Ronnie Spector.”

The group head to the Bridgwater Arts Centre on Saturday October 4 at 8pm.

Tickets cost £10. For more information or to book your tickets visit bridgwaterartscentre.co.uk
