HOMEBREWERS from across Burnham and Highbridge are still being urged to ‘bring their own brews’ to battle it out against others in The Great Burnham Brew Off 2014.

The competition, which has been running since 2012, gives participants a chance to test their goods against other brewers and fermenters as part of the Burnham on Sea Food and Drink Festival.

The competition is free to enter and has classes for beer, liqueurs and infusions such as sloe gin and rhubarb vodka.

Sales of home brewing kits for cider, beer and wine have soured by 75% at some outlets year on year; and who can blame them, with the costs of production can be as low as £1 a bottle for cider, ales and hedgerow wines, which is a lot less that the off-licence or down the pub.

Bev Milner Simonds, festival director, said: “This is a fun competition with all home brewers encouraged to look out a bottle of their top tipple and bring it along to The Princess Theatre before 11am on Saturday October 25 for judging.

“We want to thank Balliihoo for their support this year – the task of judging is a tough one and we are pleased their team have volunteered their palettes.”
