RAZOR-SHARP comedienne Jo Caulfield (pictured) brings her top-class show, Better the Devil You Know, to Bridgwater Arts Centre this Friday.

Mercury What’s On correspondent DAISY BLACKLOCK caught up with Graham Norton’s head gag-writer...

SO BtDYN is inspired by a shocking conversation you once had with an audience member?
Yes, I got married in New York five years ago and got talking to a woman who’d also done it. And she said, ‘Wasn't it easy? Pay $50, get your licence, three minutes later you’re done. The hardest bit is when you get back to Britain and have to register it here’.

Of course I didn’t know we had to do that, and realised I wasn’t actually married to my husband! Which got me thinking about big life decisions – whether you would do the same if you could make all your big life decisions again.

What’s in store for your audience?
New things go into the show all the time but I do go into how men and women are different when they argue. Women sort of load up this train of hell, and then one or two many things go on the train, and the men have no idea what’s coming their way. Then there’s that time when I gave a load of money to a homeless guy … but it turned  but he was just queuing up to buy an iPhone.

What drives your comedy?
I like things to be fair. I often get myself in trouble for saying something, and I’ll have nearly always got the wrong end of the stick, you know, it’s, ‘Oh, you’re a doctor; you’re not attacking that person.’

Somebody once described the show as a celebration of anger, which I like. I’m all about fighting the little fight. Don’t give up being subversive, even in a tiny way. It makes life more enjoyable, and you think you’re winning.

Excited about coming to Bridgwater?
“I haven’t been to Bridgwater before but there was a lot of talk about it when I did Taunton Brewhouse. I’m very intrigued to see you – Taunton was so rude about you.”

o ‘BETTER the Devil You Know’ starts at 8pm at Bridgwater Arts Centre – admission is £12/£10.
