NOT only is Taunton’s annual flower show Britain’s longest-running – it’s the second oldest in the world.
This is just one of many snippets of historical gold packed into a brand new book set to launch with this year’s floral display.
Author Anne Leamon, show vice president and former secretary, has explored the intriguing history and prominence of the show, which was established in 1831.
She’ll be giving a talk on her findings and signing copies of ‘Taunton Flower Show: The Oldest Longest Running Show In The Country’ on Thursday, July 25, from 7pm – a matter of days before the start of this year’s event.
Speaking to the County Gazette, Anne said: “I’ve been going to Taunton Flower Show since I was a child, having lived in Taunton all my life.
“Then when my husband and I started exploring the history we found it was so important to Taunton originally.
“In the 1870s there were floral arches put up in the town by traders, who would put them up outside their shops, and they could be up to 60 or 70 feet high, right across the road, the whole town being decorated.”
She added: “I really want to revive the show’s importance to Taunton.”
Tickets are £4 for the book talk at Brendon Books, Bath Place, Taunton.
