World class DJ, Norman Jay MBE brought his rare groove, funk and house to Cornwall last weekend, packing out the Jubilee Queen boat as it sailed out from Padstow harbour to tour the Camel Estuary.

It was the first Doom Bar Session and the group literally sailed out over the infamous Doom Bar, the sandbank which is the namesake for Sharp’s Brewery ale.

The full Norman Jay set included a number of Aretha Franklin classics, paying a timely tribute to the American Queen of Soul who passed away last week.

A major force on the London scene, Norman Jay was awarded an MBE in 2002 for his services to music. He runs the legendary Good Times stage at Notting Hill Carnival which is a huge attraction for those attending the atmospheric August event.

Following the Doom Bar session Norman tweeted: “Have to say that Cornish crowd were proper up for it last night. A brilliant night. Padstow was absolutely rocking.”

South West-based DJ ‘Mr Deluxx’ also tweeted: “What an absolute blast! Norman Jay MBE was on fire last night on the Jubilee Queen. Just an education in DJing from start to finish. Big thanks to Sharp’s Brewery.”

Sharp’s has announced a winter Doom Bar Session for Saturday, December 8 with the guest to be announced.

James Nicholls of Sharps’s Brewery said: “We are thrilled to be bringing such awesome music acts to North Cornwall as part of our new Doom Bar Sessions, and Norman Jay kicked it off perfectly. With these unique and intimate gigs out on the water we want to give people a chance to relax and enjoy some quality tunes while taking in the amazing coastline and enjoying a beer. Our flagship beer is named after the Doom Bar sandbank which lies underneath the Camel Estuary, so these Doom Bar Sessions honour this natural wonder and showcase how amazing this part of Cornwall we call home is.”
