Inclusive dance theatre company Shallal is to bring a new show, Doorways, with Ladders and Footprints, to The Acorn, Penzance on Friday, December 1.

Doorways was originally devised for Godolphin House near Helston and performed in front of its impressive façade. Ladders and Footprints, made for Falmouth library, included performances outside the library building, within the grand lobby, and in the library itself.

The new show successfully brings the best of both shows indoors for a stage production which promises mesmerising improvised dance, ingenious costume and compelling drama.

Both shows are inspired by the idea of opening doors to learning and opportunity and both tell stories of Cornish lives and places. Ladders and Footprints is a celebration of the life of Victorian Cornish philanthropist John Passmore Edwards and his vision for education and equality for all. As well as original dance and music created by Shallal members and artists, the show will include poetry and creative writing, some of which is translated into British Sign Language.

“Shallal is thrilled to return to the Acorn,” said creative director Jo Willis. “This is where Shallal started 30-years-ago, and as a Newlyn-based dance company it always feels like home.”

Shallal is grateful for the grass roots support as well as national funding and partnerships which enable this work to take place as part of their Cornish Doorways project. Funding partners include Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund, The Garfield Weston Foundation, Feast Cornwall and many local donors.
