After the success of their critically-acclaimed third album Sharpener in summer 2016, London’s brass juggernauts Hackney Colliery Band have blazed back onto the scene with their first live album and a UK tour.

The band, described by BBC Radio 2 as “one of the best live bands we have in this country”, have gained a reputation for incredible live shows, selling out venues across the UK and Europe, and will be performing at the Hall for Cornwall on Tuesday, June 6.

Sharpener entered the jazz charts at number three - and the cross-genre independent charts at number 14 - and went on to gain enormous critical acclaim, with the Guardian heralding it as "clever, and enormous fun" and the Sunday Times describing it as "an ingenious blend of showmanship and intelligence."

Hackney Colliery Band have had a phenomenal few years, from playing a 45 minute set at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics and sets at the MOBO, Brit and Mercury Awards to live sessions on BBC Two, BBC Radio 2, Jazz FM (UK) and worldwide airplay from many more. They have collaborated with the likes of Amy Winehouse and Jamie Cullum, and sold out clubs across Europe with a tour schedule even taking in the Faroe Islands.

Their set is as diverse as the London borough that gave them their name, with influences from contemporary rock and electronica, to jazz and global brass. A New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes and sousaphone, with a sprinkling of electronics, mean that Hackney Colliery Band are rooted in tradition, yet sound thoroughly modern.

Combined with a relaxed stage presence and thoroughly British sense of humour which frontman Steve Pretty has developed through his solo work with many high-profile UK comedians, their live show is able to have an extraordinarily broad appeal.

Hackney Colliery Band will be at the Hall For Cornwall on Tuesday, June 6, at 7.30pm, and tickets are available at hallforcornwall.co.uk or on 01872 262466.
