A much sought after young folk duo who have won accolades from the BBC will be coming to Cornwall next week as a guest of the Penzance Folk Club.

Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar have won two BBC Folk Awards since 2013, including Best Breakthrough Act, and have already released two albums and played at major venues and events - including Cambridge Folk Festival.

Their latest CD The Silent Majority was featured by Folk UK as its album of the month, and praised for its “panache, confidence and… irresistible enthusiasm for the music.”

The review continued: “It’s an album which firmly establishes the reputations of Greg Russell and Ciaran Algar as one of the best duos on the British folk circuit today.”

Ciaran not only plays banjo, guitar, fiddle and percussion, but his singing has been described by fRoots as “engagingly empathetic and honest with a lovely tone.”

Fellow singer and multi-instrumentalist Greg has also appeared recently in the sell-out revival of Peter Bellamy’s folk opera The Transports.

“They have been selling out across the country in much bigger venues than ours,” said Folk Club representative Hilary Roberts, “but this is a rare chance to see them close up, in an acoustic setting.” Linda Collins, co-founder and organiser of the club, added: “This sensational duo are making big waves on the national scene.”

The pair will be upstairs at the Admiral Benbow on Chapel Street in Penzance, on Wednesday April 19 at 8.30pm. Tickets are £9.50 available from CRBO (01726 879500), or by calling Penzance Folk Club on 01736 333007.
