The internationally acclaimed tenor John Treleaven will be returning to his home town of Porthleven this spring to give a very special concert in a local church as part of this year’s Porthleven Food and Music Festival.

On Saturday, April 22, at 7pm, John, accompanied by pianist Charles Wiffen, will trade the stages of European opera houses for Porthleven’s Methodist Church. With tickets priced at just £8, this concert offers an unmissable opportunity for classical music fans to hear one of the great voices of his generation in an intimate setting.

John will sing two of the Wagnerian works, from Tristan und Isolde and Lohengrin, which have defined his glittering career in the world’s most prestigious opera houses. He will also perform Benjamin Britten’s Winter Words: a song cycle for tenor and piano based on eight late poems by Thomas Hardy. Alongside these he has chosen three Cornish songs, including The Floral Dance and Porthleven Town.

Although now resident in Germany, John was born and bred in Porthleven and worked locally until his singing voice was heard by a retired examiner for the London College of Music and he was persuaded to consider a musical career. Over more than 40 years this has taken him on a remarkable journey to many of the world's great operatic stages, singing the finest roles, but he remains in close contact with the town of his birth.

His accompanist for this concert, Charles Wiffen, is also an acclaimed musician. A member of the London Archduke Trio, he is assistant dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Bath Spa University, with an impressive list of credits as both performer and teacher.

Tickets for the concert are available from Rosie Hughes on 01326 574270; at Porthleven Holiday Cottages, Celtic House, Porthleven; or on the door on the night at the Methodist Church.
