Graves to make way for cars

PARKING has become such a problem outside St Mary the Virgin Church in Bishops Lydeard that the Rev Michael Wishart wants to turn part of the graveyard into a car park.

Mr Wishart says parking has become such a problem at times of funerals, weddings and concerts that drastic action has to be taken.

Mr Wishart said: "People are having to park on the road, which is very narrow, and it's causing traffic problems.

"I'm suggesting we take part of the churchyard to create a car park.

"However, this will mean we'll have to move about 12 headstones to create enough space."

Mr Wishart said most of the headstones date back to the 1800s, but the church was doing all it can to contact relatives to gain their permission to move them.

If the plans are agreed by the diocese Mr Wishart wants to create a one-way system and a car park for up to 24 cars.

He said: "We're hoping to get approval soon, and want the car park to be up and running by the autumn.

Anyone wanting to know more about the plans should contact Mr Wishart on 01823-432413
