More smokers snub out habit
MORE than 4,000 Somerset smokers quit last year.
More people are using the NHS Stop Smoking Service, provided locally by Somerset Primary Care Trust.
Caroline May, a stop smoking specialist with the trust, said: "This is great news for all those smokers who have finally quit.
"Stopping remains the single best and most effective thing that a smoker can do to improve their health.
"You are four times more likely to succeed if you access the free, local support available from the NHS alongside nicotine replacement therapies such as patches or gum, or other medications.
"One of the successes of the NHS Stop Smoking Service is its ability to organise treatments on prescription for you through your doctor.
"Our advisors will work with you to help you choose and plan the best way for you to stop and continue to offer friendly support and encouragement for up to a year.
"As well as offering individual advice and support they run clinics, courses and drop-in sessions."
