Race goes right to the wire
A BITTERLY cold and very gusty strong northerly wind welcomed the men to their triples league at Falmouth Bowling Club on Saturday morning to play "catch up" games, and some surprising results occurred in the extreme conditions, making bowling a lottery with the wind buffeting the bowls offline.
Surprise of the day was the defeat of Stithians Ranchers, skipped by Harry Barnes, Edwin Watson number two and Phil Matthews leading, by Mawnan's Brass Monkies, skipped by Chris Gee, Tony Stevenson number two and Don Hall at lead.
After ten ends the Brass Monkies had taken a 7-4 lead and were bowling quite steadily, whilst the Ranchers were not at all happy in the conditions. The Brass Monkies continued their steady progress and ran out good winners 15-8, a great result for them.
Helston's Dancers, skipped by Russell Davies, Peter Heyden number two and Clifford Thomas leading, were in devastating form once again - this time against Constantine's Odd Bods, skipped by Bob Mynett, Ron Curnow number two and John Drayson at lead.
Very soon the Dancers had established a formidable lead of 19-3 after 10-ends. They continued to also take the next seven ends and ran out winners 29-6. The Dancers excellent form continues as they reduced the Odd Bods to only scoring on five ends - tand are certainly the in-form team.
Falmouth/Chacewater's Frostbites put out two teams as they were well behind everyone else in their fixtures. The Frostbites A played Redruth's Nomads, which promised to be a good game. However, the Frostbites skipped by Ernie Eva, Barry Dunstan number two and Colin Smith leading, an all -Chacewater rink, proved too strong for the Nomads, skipped by Rodney Richards, John James number two and T Eathorpe leading. They dominated the last phase of the game to win 21-9.
The Frostbites B, skipped by David Winnan, Tony Nancholas number two and Paddy McMullen leading, an all-Falmouth rink, were against Carnon's Cavaliers, skipped by Mike West, Ron Wright number two and Rick Blunden leading.
Teams were level at 11-11 after 14 ends, but The Cavaliers were putting the Frostbites under pressureand had an 18-11 lead with only two ends to play. The Cavaliers went on to a deserved 20-12 win - a real upset.
Bickford Smiths Miners, skipped by Geoff Stephens, Cyril Bayliss number two and Barry Jones leading, quite a useful combination, played Falmouth's Jets, skipped by Melville Angel, Jim Chatterton number two and Chris Chatterton leading. This was a very close game with the Miners finisheing the game with a three to win 16-12.
Sunday morning dawned with heavy rain showers and cold, gusty wind - again not ideal for bowling - but a little warmer than the day before and a little less wind.
Helston's Dancers, skipped by Russell Dawes, Clifford Thomas number two and Roger Leech leading, were expecting a tough battle against Falmouth's Packets, skipped by Paul Bobin, Walter Clark number two and John Bishop leading.
The Dancers in superb form once again made a great start to take the first eightends and a 13-0 lead. The Packets were not finding the green or weight and were no match for the Dancers, who only conceded three ends to the Packets whilst they forged ahead to win by a landslide 25-5. They now go ahead of the Waisters on shot difference, but the Waisters still hold one point advantage.
Falmouth's Waisters, skipped by Ron Medlyn, Tom Reid number two and Paul Jordan at lead, were playing fellow club mates Falmouth's Jets, skipped by Harry Coult, John Jones number two and John Daly leading.
The Waisters were not bowling very well and were being pressurised by John Daly's leading, which was excellent. However, the Waisters just kept hold of the advantage to lead 16-8 after 15 ends, a lead which turned out to be just enough as the Jets won the last three ends but were unable to catch the Waisters who won 16-13.
Chacewater/Falmouth's Frostbites, skipped by Tony Nancholas, David Winnan number two and Paddy McMullen leading, had a good start to lead 10-0 after five ends against Constantine's Odd Bods, skipped by Ron Curnow, Matthew Carny number two and Bob Mynett leading.
The Frostbites kept pushing ahead and after 13 ends led 19-7 and although the Odd Bods captured the next four ends, it wasn't enough to affect the Frostbites' good start, leaving the Frostbites winners 20-12.
Penryn's No Front End were all front end players today, as normally an excellent lead, David Curnow, turned to skip, Dennis Nicholls number two and Brian Gerry leading - they were against Mawnan's Brass Monkies, skipped by Chris Gee, Richard Ragg number two and Don Hall leading.
After ten ends the NFE's had worked themselves into a 14-1 lead as the Brass Monkies. The NFEs maintianed the pressure and reaped the reward as they went on to win 20-8.
This weekend sees the final two games to be played on Saturday and Sunday morning. On Sunday the trophy will be presented with a £100 cheque to the winners followed by a buffet lunch in the clubhouse.
The competition is going down to the wire with neither the Waisters or Dancers unable to drop a point. Both teams will have to win their games as it is between these two teams who will become the champions.
Falmouth men visited Veryan on Monday afternoon in a four rink friendly. Falmouth put out a decent team and Veryan made them fight all the way to win.
This concludes the indoor season and concentration will now have to be on outdoor bowling. Falmouth will be playing three men's teams, A and B in the senior league and the Cs in division two. Training will begin in earnest after next weekend.
